How to split a room with Would You Rather

  1. One person hits Draw a card and reads the whole dilemma, leaning on the "or" so both halves land.
  2. Give the room three seconds to think. Then everyone shows their answer together: one finger for the first option, two for the second.
  3. Neither is not an option, and nor is "it depends". If someone tries to wriggle out, the reader picks for them.
  4. The smaller side has to justify itself while the bigger side cross-examines. Anyone voting alone gets thirty seconds to win the room round.
  5. Somebody from the losing side reads next. A dead heat? The reader breaks it with their own vote.

Party rules add a stake: everyone in the minority takes a forfeit, and the forfeit ideas page is full of ones that need nothing but the room. The Would You Rather guide covers the traditional rules and sorts a much longer list by theme.

Dilemmas you could draw

All of these come from the party deck this generator deals, which plays on phones, exes and how much of your life you would let the group see:

  • Would you rather your group chat leaks, or your camera roll leaks?
  • Would you rather everyone sees your screen time, or everyone sees your bank balance?
  • Would you rather all your exes have your live location, or all your exes are in one group chat?
  • Would you rather your ex writes your dating bio, or your mum picks your profile photos?
  • Would you rather your last relationship becomes a documentary, or your next one is a live reality show?
  • Would you rather be famous but broke, or be rich but completely unknown?
  • Would you rather have to sing everything you say, or have to dance everywhere you walk?

The good ones have no right answer. If the room votes nine to one, the card was too easy; if it splits down the middle and starts a row, it was perfect.

Clean dilemmas for any table

Tap Clean for a separate deck that swaps dating and exes for time, money, work and superpowers. There is no drinking, no innuendo and no swearing, so a grandparent and a graduate can argue over the same card.

  • Would you rather always be ten minutes early, or always be ten minutes late?
  • Would you rather have unlimited free flights, or never queue for anything again?
  • Would you rather be the best player on a losing team, or the worst on a winning one?
  • Would you rather have the perfect job in a city you dislike, or an average job somewhere you love?
  • Would you rather start every conversation with a compliment, or end every one with a joke?
  • Would you rather wear the same outfit every day, or eat the same lunch every day?

The page remembers which deck you picked on this phone. Open the clean deck directly to send someone to it ahead of time.

When Would You Rather is the right pick

Uni flats

A flat dinner where half the table met last week. Everybody can answer a dilemma, because it asks what you would do rather than what you have done. Ask who would rather always be ten minutes early or always ten minutes late, and you find out who is going to make the flat miss every train. There is more for student houses on party games for uni.

Work socials

The safest icebreaker going. Nobody confesses anything, yet four days a week for less money or five days for more tells you a lot about a colleague, and it works on a team that only met this morning. Keep to the clean deck and let the minority explain themselves: that is the part people remember on Monday. For a whole meeting's worth, our icebreaker questions for work are sorted by room, with timings.

Weddings

Put a phone on each table between courses. Clean dilemmas such as a rewind button for your life or a pause button get the two families debating, which beats more small talk about the venue. It also fills the gap while the photographer has the couple outside.

Nights in

Old friends belong on the party deck, where the questions are about exes, group chats and camera rolls. The vote takes a second; the argument about why your best mate picked the live location option can take the rest of the evening. For other ideas, see games to play with friends.

Would You Rather generator: your questions

What if the room splits exactly in half?

The reader breaks the tie with their own vote, or both sides make their case and everyone votes again. Second votes are rarely the same as the first.

Can someone just say neither?

Not in this game. The whole point is that both options are a bit rubbish. "Neither" is a refusal, and most groups treat it as one.

How many people does it need?

Two can play by swapping answers on a car journey or a first date. Voting works properly from four, and it is at its best with six to ten, where a side can be properly outnumbered.

Will a dilemma come round twice?

Each deck is dealt from a single shuffle made when you open the page, so you see every dilemma once before any repeat. After the last card the button turns into Start again.

Is there a longer version?

Yes: the Antics app. It comes with free Would You Rather cards, and Antics Premium unlocks the full deck, with no repeats until you have played the lot, as one of nine games on one phone. It is free to download on iPhone and Android, in eleven languages, with no ads and no sign-up, and Imposter and The Four Kings cost nothing to play.
