What to play, and when

Here’s the game for each part of the night, from week one in halls to the last half hour of pres.

Pre-drinks games that aren’t drinking games

Pres is the hour where people are still arriving, someone’s still getting ready and nobody wants to learn the rules of anything. One phone passed round fixes it. Antics mode deals dares, votes and rules that stay live for a few cards, so the game rolls on as people come and go.

The app itself never tells anyone to drink, and nothing in it depends on drinking. It fits pres without being a drinking game, and the flatmate who isn’t drinking plays exactly the same game.

Not drinking tonight? Party games without drinking explains how it works.

Freshers week: start gentle

In week one you’re playing with strangers, so open with games where nobody is put on the spot: Would You Rather, then Most Likely To. Never Have I Ever works once people relax, and Imposter gives the quiet ones a proper role.

→ Freshers icebreakers that aren’t cringe

→ Icebreaker questions for a new class or club

Hosting at your flat? The 15-minute reset gets the kitchen back to normal before bed.

Play it right: a dare or a forfeit should cost dignity, not wellbeing. Agree that anyone can swap one they won’t do, and look after your mates.

How it works

  1. Download Antics free on iPhone or Android. No account, no sign-up.
  2. Pick a game. Add names if you like, and some cards will call people out by name.
  3. Pass the phone round. Read the card out, do what it says, tap for the next one.
  4. Your phone remembers which cards it has shown, so nothing repeats until you’ve seen the lot.
