Imposter food words: the Food and Drinks deck

Everyone has an opinion about food, which is exactly why it makes such a good Imposter category. Here is the Food and Drinks list from Antics, plus the words that start the loudest arguments.

Food is the category where the imposter gets caught by their own face. Say Marmite to a room and half of it winces, so anyone who gives a clue with a suspiciously neutral expression gets noticed. Sunday Roast is a gift for the crew because everybody has an opinion on their mum's gravy, and a trap for the imposter because there are only so many safe clues and they are all gone by the third player. Then there is Bubble Tea, which splits the room by age: some people talk tapioca with real authority, everyone else says "the one with the little balls in" and hopes for the best.

The full food and drink word list, with the hints the app gives the imposter

Every word below is dealt in the Antics app. The easy hint is what the imposter sees on the default setting; the hard hint is the harder tier. Playing from this page with paper? Give the imposter one hint or none, your call.

Running a round with the food list

  1. Open Imposter in Antics and pick Food and Drinks in the lobby. It is one of the free decks.
  2. Add names and pass the phone. Everyone sees the same food, except the imposter, who gets a one-word hint instead.
  3. Clue round, one word each. House rule for this deck: "tasty", "nice" and "yum" are banned. They fit every word on the list, which is exactly why the imposter reaches for them.
  4. Go round again if the first lap ended with three people saying "cheese".
  5. Vote on three, then let a caught imposter guess the food. Close counts for nothing: "some sort of pasta" is not Lasagne.

The food words that catch people out

The dangerous words live in clusters. Pizza, Garlic Bread and Lasagne share an Italian postcode, so a clue meant for one can walk the imposter to a neighbour, and they lose the guess by one street. Porridge is hard for the opposite reason: nobody has anything to say about it. This is where the hint earns its keep. The app deals the imposter one word every round, Easy by default or Hard if you choose it in the lobby, and it points them in a direction without handing over the answer. Three from the deck, easy hint first: Kebab: Takeaway / Regret. Coca-Cola: Fizzy / Christmas. Porridge: Bowl / Bland. That last one is just the app being honest.

Who should play the food deck

Anyone who has ever argued about whether a Jacket Potato counts as a proper dinner. It is brilliant in a uni flat, where the gap between what people cook and what they claim to cook is the whole joke, and it holds up at a family do because your uncle knows as much about a Full English as anyone alive. It is also the safest pick for a mixed group who do not watch the same telly or follow the same people. Everybody eats.

Is Food and Drinks free to play?

Yes. Imposter is free in Antics and Food and Drinks is one of its free decks, no subscription needed.

Will my non-British mates understand Marmite and a Full English?

Maybe not, which is half the fun. If you run the app in Spanish or Portuguese, the most British words are swapped for local favourites rather than translated, so nobody in Mexico City gets asked to describe a Yorkshire Pudding.

Can the crew name a restaurant or a chain as a clue?

Keep it generic. "Italian" for a pizza is fair game. Naming a chain turns a clue into an answer, and the imposter will quietly thank you for it.

Dinner is served. One of you is lying about it.

Food and Drinks is free in Antics. Pass one phone, everyone peeks, and the app keeps the secret so nobody has to be the dealer.
