Imposter places: the Locations deck

Locations was the first Imposter deck in Antics, and it is still the natural place to start. Everyone is somewhere together except one person, who has to act like they know where they are.

Places work because you can describe a place by how it feels rather than what it is. "I'm slightly damp" is a legitimate clue. So is "someone is crying and it isn't me". IKEA is a favourite because every clue is an emotion: lost, arguing, inexplicably hungry. A laundrette is the opposite, a place half the room has never set foot in, so the crew's clues go vague and the imposter blends right in. And the office Christmas party is barely a location at all. It is a mood, and everyone has one.

The full places word list, with the hints the app gives the imposter

Every word below is dealt in the Antics app. The easy hint is what the imposter sees on the default setting; the hard hint is the harder tier. Playing from this page with paper? Give the imposter one hint or none, your call.

Running a round in the Locations deck

  1. Open Imposter in Antics and choose Locations. It is free, and it is the deck the game was built around.
  2. Pass the phone. Everyone learns where you all are, apart from the imposter, who gets a hint.
  3. Take turns asking one person one question. "What are you wearing?", "Who did you come with?" and "How long have you been here?" work for nearly every place on the list, and they are brutal on a bluffer.
  4. Answer in character. If you are at the dentist, you are not having a nice time.
  5. Vote on three. A caught imposter has to name the place. "A shop" does not count, even though IKEA technically is one.

The places that fool everyone

Some places come in pairs, and pairs are where rounds fall apart. A hair salon and the barbers are both in the deck, so when the imposter hears "chair", "mirror" and "small talk" they are genuinely stuck between two answers, and so is anyone who was in the loo for the first lap. Places you only visit once are tough too: a driving test is vivid to the mate who failed three of them and a blank to everyone else. Every round the app deals the imposter a one-word hint, Easy by default and Hard if you want them to sweat. From the deck: A hair salon: Mirrors / Gossip. The barbers: Scissors / Blokes. A driving test: Clipboard / Judged.

Who Locations works for

It is the best first deck for a group that has never played, because nobody needs to know a single fact, only places they have been. Uni flats love it for obvious reasons: a student kitchen and a university lecture are both on the list, and the answers get personal fast. And yes, a hen do is one of the locations, which is a wonderful thing to be dealt while you are actually on one.

How is Locations different from the word decks?

In a word deck you describe a thing. In Locations you describe somewhere you are, so clues can be noises, smells, people and feelings. A caught imposter's last stand is naming the place rather than a word.

What is Mischief mode?

An optional twist in the lobby. Some rounds, nobody gets the secret: everyone is the imposter and everyone bluffs at everyone. It never strikes on the round you switch it on, so nobody sees it coming. On a places round it is glorious, because six people confidently describe six different buildings.

Do I have to pay for Locations?

No. Locations is free, like the rest of Imposter in Antics.

Everyone's here. One of you isn't.

Locations is free in Antics. Pass the phone, take a peek, and start asking awkward questions about where you all are.
